Pseudo-resistant Bacillus cereus uses biofilm-related mechanism to mimic vancomycin resistance during agar diffusion susceptibility testing

(Submitter supplied) The glycopeptide vancomycin is a drug of choice for the treatment of severe non-gastrointestinal infections with members of Bacillus cereus sensu lato. Recently, sporadic detection of vancomycin resistant phenotypes emerged, mostly for agar diffusion testing. The food packaging isolate BC70 displayed a pseudo-resistant phenotype for vancomycin in both Etest and disk diffusion. Transcriptome analysis of Bacillus cereus strain INRA C3 in response to iron depletion and lactoferrin, accomplished by RNA sequencing

(Submitter supplied) The iron-binding glycoprotein lactoferrin exhibits anti-bacterial activity. To investigate the overall response of Bacillus cereus to lactoferrin, total transcriptome analyses were performed. Growth conditions were mMOD minimal medium, minimal medium plus 10 mg/ml lactoferrin, as well as minimal medium without iron source for comparison. Differential regulation of genes involved in iron acquisition as well as genes encoding enterotoxins and further virulence factors was of special interest.

Novel inducible filamentous sliding motility identified in pathogenic Bacillus cereus group species

(Submitter supplied) We isolated an atmospheric contaminant, subsequently identified as a new strain of Bacillus mobilis, which showed a novel, robust, inducible filamentous sliding motility and completely colonized a bacterial culture plate in less than 48 h under some conditions. (Submitter supplied) The influence of the presence of glucose in the Y1 growth medium of Bacillus cereus strain ATCC 14579 was studied by transcriptional analysis. Furthermore, the role of CcpA in glucose induction or repression of gene expression was assessed by use of a ccpA deletion strain.
