Integration of tomato reproductive developmental landmarks and expression profiles, and the effect of SUN on fruit shape

(Submitter supplied) Universally accepted landmark stages are necessary to highlight key events in tomato reproductive development. In this study, we provide a description of floral and fruit development in a red-fruited closely related wild relative of tomato, Solanum pimpinellifolium accession LA1589. We use established and propose new landmarks as the framework for the characterization of the tomato fruit shape gene SUN in fruit development. more...

Discovering differentially expressed genes in early floral buds of SlREVRis overexpression line and wild type in tomato

(Submitter supplied) Versatile roles of REVOLUTA (REV), a Class III homeodomain-leucine zipper (HD-ZIP III) transcription factor, have been mainly depicted in Arabidopsis and Populus. In this study, we investigated the functions of its tomato homolog, namely SlREV. Over-expression of a microRNA166-resistant version of SlREV (35S::REVRis) not only resulted in vegetative abnormities such as curly leaves and fasciated stems, but also caused dramatic reproductive alterations including continuous production of flowers at pedicel abscission zone (AZ) and ectopic fruit formation on receptacles. more...

Microarray analysis of developing fruits from transgenic lines with increased or reduced SlARF9 mRNA levels in tomato.

(Submitter supplied) The transformation of the ovary into a fruit after successful completion of pollination and fertilization has been associated with many changes at transcriptomic level. These changes are part of a dynamic and complex regulatory network that is controlled by phytohormones, with a major role for auxin. One of the auxin-related genes differentially expressed upon fruit set and early tomato fruit development is Solanum lycopersicum ARF9 (SlARF9). more...

Spatial-temporal order of regulation in tomato early fruit development

(Submitter supplied) Early fruit development is crucial for crop production in tomato. After fertilization, the ovary undergoes a cell division and a cell expansion stages before maturation. Although the roles of regulatory signals such as hormone and carbohydrate during early fruit development have been studied, the spatial distribution and the sequential initiation of these regulatory signals is still poorly understood. more...

Expression profiling of tomato pre-abscission pedicels

(Submitter supplied) Organ abscission is a general activity found in plants and its regulation is an important agronomical concern because the trait directly affects the harvesting efficiency of fruits or grains and the yields. Generally, abscission takes place at a specialized cell layer, which is called abscission zones (AZs). So far, investigations on organ abscission have been focused mainly on the cell activities during organ detachment. more...

Expression of genes in red fruit of Andean tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and Solanum pimpinellifolium

(Submitter supplied) In this study, we explored the metabolome and transcriptome of the ripe fruit in nine landrace accessions representing the seven genetic groups and compared them to the mature fruit of the wild progenitor S. pimpinellifolium. The goal is to shed light in understanding the factors responsible for acquiring tomato fruit quality (taste and flavour) at molecular level during the domestication process.

Ploidy-specific transcriptomes shed light on the heterogeneous identity and metabolism of developing pericarp cells

(Submitter supplied) Endoreduplication, during which cells increase their DNA content through successive rounds of full genome replication without cell division, is the major source of endopolyploidy in higher plants. Endoreduplication plays pivotal roles in plant growth and development and is associated with the activation of specific transcriptional programs that are characteristic to each cell type, thereby defining their identity. more...

Transcriptome profiling and weighted gene co-expression network analysis of early floral development in Aquilegia coerulea

(Submitter supplied) The current experiment was designed to obtain a broad characterization of the genetic pathways acting in early Aquilegia coerulea floral meristem development. We conducted an in-depth transcriptome profiling of early floral development in A. coerulea at four finely dissected developmental stages, with eight biological replicates per stage. . The developmental window we sequenced sampled stages that started with a late phase of stamen initiation, covered the period of FM termination, and ended with the initial stage of morphogenesis of the floral organs.

Various tomato cultivars display contrasting morphological and molecular responses to a chronic heat stress

(Submitter supplied) Climate change is one of the biggest threats that human society currently needs to face. Heat waves associated with global warming negatively affect plant growth and development and will increase in intensity and frequency in the coming years. Tomato is one of the most produced and consumed fruit in the world but remarkable yield losses occur every year due to the sensitivity of many cultivars to heat stress. more...
