The objective of the research at the Rifle site is to gain a comprehensive understanding of microbial diversity and metabolic potential in freshwater aquifer systems, including carbon turnover mechanisms and microbial community dynamics and heterogeneity over time, with depth in the aquifer, and as a function of geochemical conditions (natural variation or imposed via experiment).
