Rat Genome Overview

Information about the continuing improvement of the rat genome

GRCr8 was generated by Dr. Peter Doris (University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston) with colleagues Theodore Kalbfleisch (University of Kentucky) and Melissa Smith (University of Louisville) in the NHGRI-funded "Inbred Rat Genomes Project". It is a new de novo assembly that includes some contigs from the PacBio CLR reads produced for mRatBN7.2 (GCA_015227675.2).

Next assembly update

GRCr8 (GCA_036323735.1) has superseded mRatBN7.2 (GCA_015227675.1). See the Release Notes below for additional details.

GRCr8

  • Release date: January 31, 2024
  • Release type: major

mRatBN7.2

  • Release date: November 4, 2020
  • Release type: major
  • Release notes: This assembly was released by Sanger Institute, the Vertebrate Genome Project and the Darwin Tree of Life Project. The GRC, including RGD, are now working to curate the rat reference genome assembly. This version changed the accession of the mitochondrial chromosome but did not change any sequence, so it is identical sequence-wise to the mRatBN7.1 (GCA_015227675.1) assembly.
