Comparative transcriptome analysis reveals the mechanism of cross-protection against Verticillium wilt conferred on sunflower by hypovirulent strain Gibellulopsis nigrescens Vn-1

(Submitter supplied) Background: Hypovirulent fungal strain Gibellulopsis nigrescens Vn-1 cross-protects sunflower against Verticillium wilt. To discover the mechanism of cross-protection by this hypovirulent strain, we analyzed defense enzyme activities and transcriptomes of root samples infected with virulent and hypovirulent strains. Results: Defense enzyme activities increased after inoculation, with the highest levels observed 24 h post-inoculation. more...

Transcriptional Regulation of Sunflower Heliotropism and Phototropism

(Submitter supplied) Sunflowers are famous for their ability to track the sun throughout the day, and then reorient at night to face east the following morning. This process, termed heliotropism, is generally believed to be a specialized form of phototropism; however, the underlying mechanism is unknown. To better understand heliotropism we used RNA sequencing to compare the transcriptional profiles of sunflower stems during heliotropism, and blue light-induced phototropism.

Comparative transcriptome analysis reveals the Sclerotinia sclerotiorum resistance mechanism in sunflower

(Submitter supplied) Background: Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is one of the most severe fungus diseases in many important crops including sunflower (Helianthus annuus) worldwide. Breeding the resistant varieties are the best strategy to control S. sclerotiorum, however, the molecular regulatory mechanisms of sunflower in response to S. sclerotiorum remain poorly understood. Methods: We performed a leaf transcriptomic analysis to understand the differential defense response to S. more...

Genome-wide mapping of histone H3 Lysine 4 trimethylation (H3K4me3) and its Involvement in fatty acid biosynthesis in sunflower developing seeds.

(Submitter supplied) Histone modifications are of paramount importance during plant development. Investigating chromatin remodeling in developing oilseeds sheds light on the molecular mechanisms controlling fatty acid metabolism as well as facilitates the identification of new functional regions in oil crop genomes. The present study characterized the epigenetic modifications H3K4me3 in relationship with the expression of fatty acid related-genes and transcription factors in developing sunflower seeds.

Transcriptomic data of leaves from eight sunflower lines and their sixteen hybrids under water deficit

(Submitter supplied) Twenty-four sunflower genotypes were selected to represent genetic diversity within cultivated sunflower and included both inbred lines and their hybrids. Drought stress was applied to plants in pots at the vegetative stage using the high-throughput phenotyping platform Heliaphen. Here, we provide transcriptomics data from sunflower leaves. These data differentiate both treatment and the different genotypes and constitute a valuable resource to the community to study adaptation of crops to drought and the transcriptomic basis of heterosis.

Global transcriptome of Helianthus annuus, Beta vulgaris, Ricinus communis and Phaseolus vulgaris healthy plants and plant infected by the fungal pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (strain 1980)

(Submitter supplied) Quantitative disease resistance (QDR) is a form of plant immunity conserved across species able to limit infections caused by a broad range of pathogens. QDR has a complex genetic determinism, the bases of which are not fully understood. The number of genes contributing to the QDR response and the extent to which molecular components of the QDR response vary across plant species remain elusive. The fungal pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, causal agent of white mold disease on hundreds of plant species, triggers QDR responses in host populations. more...

Differential gene expression profile between two sunflower inbred lines with different ability to tolerate water stress

(Submitter supplied) This study characterizes and compares the gene expression profiles between aerial part and roots of two sunflower inbred lines with contrasting response to water stress: B59 (sensitive) and B71 (tolerant) under non-stress and water stress mimicked by mannitol application. The results allowed us to evaluate the response of the primary and secondary metabolism as studies of the hormonal pathways of jasmonic, salicylic and abscisic acid such as gibberellins and auxins among others.

A sunflower WRKY transcription factor stimulates the mobilization of seed-stored reserves during germination and post-germination growth

(Submitter supplied) Germinating oilseeds convert stored lipids into sugars and thereafter in metabolic energy that is used in seedling growth and establishment. During germination, the induced lipolysis linked to the glyoxylate pathway and gluconeogenesis produces sucrose, which is then transported to the embryo and driven through catabolic routes. Herein, we report that the sunflower transcription factor HaWRKY10 regulates carbon partitioning by reducing carbohydrate catabolism and increasing lipolysis and gluconeogenesis. more...

The sunflower transcription factor HaHB11 improves yield, biomass and flood tolerance via the quiescent response in transgenic plants

(Submitter supplied) HaHB11 is a divergent member of the sunflower homeodomain-leucine zipper I subfamily of transcription factors. A sunflower microarray was hybridized with RNA from HaHB11-transformed leaf-disks and its analysis indicated the regulation of many genes encoding enzymes from fermentative pathways. A 1300 bp sequence exhibiting flooding-responsive cis-acting elements, upstream the transcription initiation site, was isolated and Arabidopsis plants transformed with a construct in which this promoter directs GUS expression. more...

(Submitter supplied) affy_tour_2012-02 - Identification of transcripts that are addressed to traduction in imbibed seeds in relation with dormancy: comparison of the translatome in Dormant versus Non-Dormant seeds -- At harvest seeds are dormant. They stay dormant if they are stored at -20°C (D) and become non-dormant (ND) if they are stored 2 months at +20°C. Polysomal fractions were purified on sucrose gradients from sunflower axis isolated from dormant and non-dormant seeds imbibed at 10°C during 3h, 15h or 24h. more...

affy_sunflower_2011_02-Effect of frost on sunflower

(Submitter supplied) affy_sunflower_2011_02 - affy_sunflower_2011_02 - The early sowing constitutes an alternative strategy to avoid drought occurring during flowering and post-flowering periods and responsible for decrease in sunflower production. In French cropping system, early sowing is associated to low temperature period and frost during first development stages in sunflower. Knowledge about metabolism of frost acclimation must be performed to supply tools for breeding programs in sunflower. more...

affy_sunflower_2010_13-ROS and hormones in sunflower seed dormancy.

(Submitter supplied) affy_sunflower_2010_13 - affy_sunflower_2010_13 - It concerns the interaction between ROS and hormones in dormancy release in sunflower seeds. ABA is responsible for dormancy maintenance, while GA and ethylene promote seed germination. Based on our results, ROS could represent good candidate to shift from a hormone signalling to another determining the dormancy state in sunflower seeds.-We aim to understand the mechanisms controlling sunflower seed dormancy at the transcriptomic level, by the application of treatments which maintain dormancy as ABA, or alleviate dormancy as ROS and ethylene. more...
