Low red to far-red light environments alter nitrogen assimilation in corn (Zea mays)

(Submitter supplied) The goal of this work was to investigate the influence of low red to far-red (R:FR) signals generated by a biological weedy and an artificial source of far-red light on the nitrate assimilation pathway in maize. In the absence of direct resource competition, far-red light reflected from neighboring weeds compromises light quality (red to far-red ratio; R/FR) and causes a wide range of morphological and physiological responses at early growth stages of crop plants. more...

Comprehensive transcriptome profiling and identification of potential genes responsible for salt tolerance in tall fescue leaves under salinity stress

(Submitter supplied) illumina RNA sequencing of tall fescue leaves generated a total of raw 144,339 reads. After de novo assembly, unigenes with a total length of 129,749,938 base pairs were obtained. For functional annotations, the unigenes were aligned to functional databases. Further analysis revealed 79,352 coding DNA sequences and 13,003 microsatellites distributed across 11,277 unigenes as well as single nucleotide polymorphisms. more...

Transcriptomic response of tall fescue to heat stress and improved thermotolerance by melatonin and 24-epibrassinolide

(Submitter supplied) Purpose: We aimed to dissect heat response of tall fescue and possible roles of melatonin and 24-epibrassinolide during thermotolerance. Methods: A total amount of 3 µg RNA was used for generation of sequencing libraries using NEBNext® Ultra™ RNA Library Prep Kit for Illumina® (NEB, USA) following manufacturer’s recommendations and index codes were added to attribute sequences to each sample. After cluster generation, the library preparations were sequenced on an Illumina Hiseq platform and 125 bp/150 bp paired-end reads were generated. more...

Pituitary Gene Expression Profiles of Growing Beef Steers Grazing High versus Low Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue Grass

(Submitter supplied) Neotyphodium coenophialum is an endophytic fungus that infects most tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) pastures that are commonly used in animal grazing systems in the United States. Beef cattle grazing such pastures are impaired in health and production performance, resulting in a large economic loss in US food-animal production systems. Based on clinical and biochemical blood analyte profiles, hepatic targeted gene and protein analyses, and hepatic transcriptomic profiling, microarray analysis using the BovGene-1_0-v1 array (Affymetrix) was conducted to determine if grazing endophyte-infected tall fescue pastures affects pituitary gene expression profiles of growing beef steers. more...

Based on the clinical symptoms and laboratory analyses of blood, it was hypothesized that such affected cattle display liver-specific changes in the expression of gene transcripts that are associated with the metabolic enzymes and transporters critical for beef health and performance. more...

Molecular response of an invasive weed to different competitive conditions.

(Submitter supplied) Competition is a major determinant of plant community structure consisting of both species-specific and general interactions, either of which may influence competitive competency and plant abundance and size. In certain cases, competitive competency could arise from altered gene expression and plant function when an individual is confronted with new competitors. We explored competition at the molecular level by hybridizing transcripts from Centaurea maculosa (spotted knapweed), one of North America's most invasive exotic plant species, to an Arabidopsis microarray chip. more...
