Wastewater treatment plants collect viruses from the surrounding environment and from the human waste sent to them. By sampling the viruses in the plant this study is able to get a snapshot of the ssDNA viruses in the Tallahassee area around the time of collection. There are several notable agricultural viruses with circular ssDNA genomes, making the genomes recovered by this study of agricultural and environmental interest. Additionally, the model virus system Microviridae (specifically PhiX174) has a ssDNA genome and this study aimed to gain insight into the Microviridae present in the system.
