YhjD/YihY/BrkB family envelope integrity protein
YhjD and YihY are paralogs in Escherichia coli K-12. YhjD appears to have a transporter-like function in transporting lipid IV-A, a precursor of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Mutation of BrkB in Bordetella pertussis increases serum resistance, which has led to it being called a virulence factor, but the finding would be consistent with a housekeeping role in cell envelope maintenance.
YhjD family protein
YhjD family protein similar to Escherichia coli inner membrane protein YhjD; related to Bordetella pertussis BrkB, a virulence factor that is essential for resistance to complement-dependent killing by serum
inner membrane protein YhjD
This family, including YhjD in E. coli, is a conserved inner membrane protein homologous to YihY, which in turn was incorrectly assigned to be ribonuclease BN. Thus, any suggestion this family is similar to ribonucleases should be removed. Members of this family may act as transporters of cell wall precursors, maintaining cell envelope integrity and explaining why mutation of the Bordetella homolog BrkB leads to increased serum resistance.
