Sperm-activating peptides

The sperm-activating peptides (SAPs) are isolated in egg-conditioned media (egg jelly) of sea urchins. SAPs have several effects on sea urchin spermatozoa: stimulate sperm respiration and motility through intracellular alkalinization, transient elevation of cAMP, cGMP and Ca++levels in sperm cells [1,2]. [1]. 1756858. Determination of the amino acid sequence of an intramolecular. disulfide linkage-containing sperm-activating peptide by tandem. mass spectrometry.. Yoshino K, Takao T, Shimonishi Y, Suzuki N;. FEBS Lett 1991;294:179-182.. [2]. 2059627. Identification of a novel amino acid, o-bromo-L-phenylalanine,. in egg-associated peptides that activate spermatozoa.. Yoshino K, Takao T, Suhara M, Kitai T, Hori H, Nomura K,. acid phosphatase

A member of this family, AcpA from Burkholderia mallei, has been charactized as a surface-bound glycoprotein with acid phosphatase activity, as can be shown with the colorigenic substrate 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl phosphate. This family shares regions of sequence similarity with phosphocholine-preferring phospholipase C enzymes (TIGR03396) from many of the same species.
