All wasps were collected directly from their nests during the daytime, placed immediately into RNAlater (Ambion, Invitrogen) and stored at -20°C until further use. Total RNA was extracted using the RNeasy Universal Plus Mini kit (Qiagen, #73404) RNA libraries were prepared for sequencing using standard Illumina Truseq kit protocols

Trinity used to assemble a de novo transcriptome RSEM used to calculate normalised gene counts per Trinity transcript Supplementary_files_format_and_content: Trinity fasta transcriptome files (.fnn) and tab-delimited RSEM files for each queen/worker which include TPM/FPKM and expected count for each sample.
