RNA-Sequencing, Physiological and RNAi Analyses Provide Insights into the Response Mechanism of the ABC-Mediated Resistance to Verticillium Dahliae Infection In cotton

(Submitter supplied) Verticillium wilt which is caused by Verticillium dahliae causes massive annual losses of cotton yield. Control by conventional mechanisms is not possible due to wide host range and longevity of dormant fungi in the soil in case of absence of a suitable host. Plants have developed various mechanisms to boost their immunity against various diseases, and one of which is through the induction of various genes. more...

Expression data from 10 DPA fibers

(Submitter supplied) Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is the most important fiber crop, and its lint yield improvement is impeded due to its narrow genetic base and the lack of understanding of the genetic basis of yield. Backcross inbred lines (BILs) or near-isogenic lines (NILs) in the same genetic background differing in lint yield, developed through advanced backcrossing, provide an important genomic resource to study the molecular genetic basis of lint yield. more...

Dynamic transcriptome analysis and volatile profiling of Gossypium hirsutum in response to the cotton bollworm Helicoverpa armigera

(Submitter supplied) Cotton seeds (Gossypium hirsutum cv. CCRI12) were grown in a growth chamber under 29/25°C temperature and a 16:8 h light:dark cycle, and water was added every two days. All plants were used in experiments at the 6-7 fully expanded true leaf stage, which occurred 5-6 weeks after sowing. Cotton bollworm (CBW; Helicoverpa armigera) larvae were reared on an artificial diet and maintained at 27 ± 2°C, 75 ± 10% relative humidity, and 14:10 h light:dark in the laboratory. more...

Expression data from the process of chilling stress causing Alternaria alternata infection and leading to cotton leaf senescence

(Submitter supplied) Cotton premature leaf senescence often occurred with an increasing frequency in many cotton growing areas and caused serious reduction in yield and quality of cotton has been one of the impontant factors that restrict severely the production of cotton. Our laboratory studies showed chilling stress is the key factor that induced A. alternatia infection, caused Alternaria disease and then lead to cotton leaf senescence, but the molecular mechanism of cotton premature leaf senscence is still unclear. more...

Comparative transcriptome profiles of cotton (G. hirsutum L. cv. Bikaneri narma) during boll development stages under bollworm infested biotic stress

(Submitter supplied) Comparative transcriptome profiles of cotton (G. hirsutum L. cv. Bikaneri narma) during boll development stages (0, 2, 5 and 10 dpa) under bollworm infested biotic stress. Cotton is one of the most commercially important fibre crops in the world and used as a source for natural textile fibre and cottonseed oil. The biotic stress is one of the major constraints for crop production. Cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) is one the major insect pest in cotton and drastically damages the cotton boll. more...

Identification of anther expressing genes in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum)

(Submitter supplied) This study was initiated with the objective of identifying the anther/tapetum specific promoters from cotton floral buds. Cotton is an important commercial crop. Hybrid cotton varieties are developed to obtain improved yield and fiber quality. Most of the hybrid seed production in cotton is carried out by hand emasculation, which requires large amount of manpower, resulting in high cost of hybrid seed. more...

Transcriptome analysis reveals crosstalk of responsive genes to multiple abiotic stresses in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

(Submitter supplied) Abiotic stress is a major environmental factor that limits cotton growth and yield, moreover, this problem has become more and more serious recently and multiple stresses often occur simultaneously due to the global climate change and environmental pollution. We used microarrays to analyze the crosstalk of responsive genes to multiple abiotic stresses including ABA, cold, drought, salinity and alkalinity in cotton.

Understanding the molecular events underpinning cultivar differences in physiological performance and heat tolerance

(Submitter supplied) Plants were acclimated for 4 d at optimal conditions (32/25 oC day/night) in the growth cabinet before initiation of the temperature treatment. For the control (32 oC), cabinet conditions were left unchanged during the treatment period. Due to limited growth cabinet space, plants of a comparative physiological age were transferred to the controlled environment growth cabinet after the control plants had been removed. more...

Expression data from 0dpa ovules of GhHD-1 silenced and over-expression transgenic cotton lines

(Submitter supplied) Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) fibres are specialised trichomes that extend from the seedcoat. To date only a few genes directly involved in the differentiation of these epidermal cells have been identified. We have identified a HD-ZIP transcription factor, GhHD-1, expressed in trichomes and early fibres that might play a role in cotton fibre initiation. Here we characterise GhHD-1 from G. hirsutum and show, using reporter constructs and qRT-PCR, that they are expressed predominantly in epidermal tissues during early fibre development and in other tissues bearing epidermal trichomes. more...
