Never-medicated and medicated bipolar patients: peripheral blood leukocytes

Analysis of peripheral blood leukocytes from first-episode, never-medicated bipolar disorder (BPD) patients and medicated BPD patients. Results provide insight into a peripheral biomarker profile for BPD that is not induced by medication.
Organism:
Homo sapiens
Type:
Expression profiling by array, transformed count, 3 disease state sets

Expression data from Patients with Bipolar (BP) Disorder and Matched Control Subjects

(Submitter supplied) There are currently no biological tests that differentiate patients with bipolar disorder (BPD) from healthy controls. While there is evidence that peripheral gene expression differences between patients and controls can be utilized as biomarkers for psychiatric illness, it is unclear whether current use or residual effects of antipsychotic and mood stabilizer medication drives much of the differential transcription. more...

Gene Expression in Blood in Scizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder

(Submitter supplied) Schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BPD) are polygenic disorders with many genes contributing to their etiologies. The aim of this investigation was to search for dysregulated molecular and cellular pathways for these disorders as well as psychosis. We conducted a blood-based microarray investigation in two independent samples with SCZ and BPD from San Diego (SCZ=13, BPD=9, control=8) and Taiwan [data not included](SCZ=11, BPD=14, control=16). more...

Gene Expression in Peripheral Blood Leucocytes in Monozygotic Twins Discordant for Chronic Fatigue

(Submitter supplied) Background. Chronic fatiguing illness remains a poorly understood syndrome of unknown pathogenesis. We attempted to identify biomarkers for chronic fatiguing illness using microarrays to query the transcriptome in peripheral blood leukocytes. Methods. Cases were 44 individuals who were clinically evaluated and found to meet standard international criteria for chronic fatigue syndrome or idiopathic chronic fatigue, and controls were their monozygotic co-twins who were clinically evaluated and never had even one month of impairing fatigue. more...

Expression profiling in monozygotic twins discordant for bipolar disorder

(Submitter supplied) To identify genes dysregulated in bipolar disorder (BD1) we carried out global gene expression profiling using whole-genome microarrays. To minimize genetic variation in gene expression levels between cases and controls we compared expression profiles in lymphoblastoid cell lines from monozygotic twin pairs discordant for the disease. We identified 82 genes that were differentially expressed by ≥ 1.3-fold in 3 BD1 cases compared to their co-twins, and which were statistically (p ≤ 0.05) differentially expressed between the groups of BD1 cases and controls. more...
