Homocysteine effect on aortic smooth muscle cells in vitro

Analysis of cultured aortic smooth muscle cells grown for 14 days in the presence of 10 or 100 umol/L DL-homocysteine (Hcy). Elevated plasma levels of Hcy are a risk factor for atherosclerotic vascular disease. Results provide insight into the role of Hcy in atherosclerosis.

The effect of homocysteine on human aortic smooth muscle cells

(Submitter supplied) Vascular calcification is a common manifestation of atherosclerosis and involves cell-mediated processes similar to the formation of bone (osteogenesis). Elevated plasma levels of homocysteine are an independent risk factor for atherosclerotic vascular disease but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We postulated that hcy can modulate the cells involved in atherosclerosis to promote calcification. more...

Expression data from human OC+BAP+ double positive versus OC-BAP- double negative cells

(Submitter supplied) Subpopulation of circulating monocyte/macrophage lineage cells show a calcifying ability in vivo and in vitro. These cells may contribute to intimal calcification within atherosclerotic lesions and may have pathophysiological clinical and therapeutic implication in vascular disorders. Such cells express Osteocalcin (OC) and Bone Alkaline Phosphatase (BAP). We analysed the expression profile of human OC+BAP+ cells versus OC-BAP- cells
