Zinc inhalation effect on the heart: dose response

Analysis of hearts of animals after subchronic exposure to zinc via nose only inhalation of aerosolized zinc sulfate (10, 30 or 100 ug zinc/m3), for 5 hours/day, 3 days/week for 16 weeks. Results provide insight into the effect of inhalation of zinc at environmentally relevant levels on the heart.

Subchronic inhalation of zinc sulfate induces cardiac changes in healthy rats

(Submitter supplied) Zinc is a common metal in most ambient particulate matter (PM), and has been proposed to be a causative component in PM-induced adverse cardiovascular health effects. Zinc is also an essential metal and has the potential to induce many physiological and nonphysiological changes. Most toxicological studies employ high levels of zinc. We hypothesized that subchronic inhalation of environmentally relevant levels of zinc would cause cardiac changes in healthy rats. more...

Paradoxical role of zinc in cardiac injury: a potential link to air pollution mortality?

(Submitter supplied) Zinc (Zn) is a major elemental component of respirable ambient particulate matter (PM) detected often at alarming levels in urban air. Exposure to PM has been widely associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, however, it is not known what components or sources of PM are causative. We recently demonstrated that long-term episodic inhalation of combustion PM, having similar amount of Zn found in urban PM, caused myocardial lesions in rats. more...

Expression data from brain tissue of Rattus norvegicus treated with D-Serine

(Submitter supplied) d-serine is naturally present throughout the human body. It is also used as add-on therapy for treatment-refractory schizophrenia. d-Serine interacts with the strychnine-insensitive glycine binding site of NMDA receptor, and this interaction could lead to potentially toxic activity (i.e., excitotoxicity) in brain tissue. The transcriptomic changes that occur in the brain after d-serine exposure have not been fully explored. more...

D-serine effect on the brain: dose response

Analysis of forebrains of animals treated with up to 500 mg/kg D-serine for 96 hours. D-serine is involved in many physiological processes through its interaction with the glycine binding site of the NMDA receptor. Results provide insight into the impact of D-serine exposure on neuronal functions.

Phosgene exposure in the mouse lung

(Submitter supplied) Carbonyl chloride (phosgene) is a toxic industrial compound (TIC) widely used in industry for the production of synthetic products, such as polyfoam rubber, plastics, and dyes. Exposure to phosgene results in a latent (1-24 hr), potentially life-threatening pulmonary edema and irreversible acute lung injury. A genomic approach was utilized to investigate the molecular mechanism of phosgene-induced lung injury. more...

Phosgene effect on lungs: time course

Analysis of lungs exposed to the toxic industrial compound carbonyl chloride (phosgene). Phosgene exposure results in pulmonary edema and acute lung injury. Differential susceptibility of Wistar Kyoto and spontaneously hypertensive rats to diesel exhaust particle exposure.

(Submitter supplied) DEP exposure is linked to increases in cardiovascular effects. This effect is enhanced in individuals with pre-existing disease. Animal models of cardiovascular disease are used to study this susceptibility. The heart is rich in mitochondria, which produce high levels of free radicals, leading to inactivation of tricarboxylic acid cycle enzymes. We hypothesized that a 4-wk DEP inhalation would result in strain-related structural impairment of cardiac mitochondria and changes in these enzyme activities in WKY and SHR. more...

Diesel exhaust particle effect on healthy animals: heart left ventricle

Analysis of heart left ventricle from healthy animals exposed to diesel exhaust (DE) particles. Spontaneously hypertensive animals also examined. DE is linked to cardiovascular impairment. Results suggest DE exposure produces a hypertensive-like cardiac gene expression pattern in healthy animals.
