Impact of heavy metals on cold acclimation of Salix viminalis roots

(Submitter supplied) Frost is a major abiotic stress limiting plant growth and development. Climate change models predict an increase in the magnitude and frequency of late-frost events, which, together with an observed loss of soil insulation, will significantly damage roots. To withstand freezing stress, plants have evolved an adaptative process known as cold acclimation. While this process is well documented, it is known that the plant response to multiple stresses is unique and cannot be deduced from the response to each stress taken separately. more...

Transcriptome analysis of contrasting resistance to herbivory by empoasca fabae in two shrub willow species and their hybrid progeny

(Submitter supplied) Shrub willow (Salix spp.), a short rotation woody biomass crop, has superior properties as a perennial energy crop for the Northeast and Midwest US. However, the insect pest potato leafhopper Empoasca fabae (Harris) (PLH) can cause serious damage and reduce yield of susceptible genotypes. Currently, the willow cultivars in use display varying levels of susceptibility under PLH infestation. However, genes and markers for resistance to PLH are not yet available for marker-assisted selection in breeding. more...

Transporters and ascorbate–glutathione metabolism for differential cadmium accumulation and tolerance in two contrasting willow genotypes

(Submitter supplied) Comparative transcriptome analysis revealed that higher expressions of several metal transporter genes (ABC transporters, K+ transporters/channels, yellow stripe-like proteins, Zinc regulated transporter/iron-regulated transporter-like proteins, etc.) are involved in root uptake and translocation capacity in HCW

Salt-responsive miRNAs and target genes of Salix matsudana Koidz

(Submitter supplied) In order to screening the responsive miRNAs and target genes of willow under salt stress, the 30-day-old plants were exposed to the salt solution (100 mmol L-1 NaCl) for 0 h and 2 d. then RNA isolated from root and stem tissues for the same time point were mixed respectively in equal amounts for small RNA (sRNA) sequencing. sRNAs with 16–30 nt were separated from 1 µg total RNA by size fractionation. more...

RNA-sequencing reveals the complexities of the transcriptional response to lignocellulosic biofuel substrates in Aspergillus niger.

(Submitter supplied) Background: Saprobic fungi are the predominant industrial sources of Carbohydrate Active enZymes (CAZymes) used for the saccharification of lignocellulose during the production of second generation biofuels. The production of more effective enzyme cocktails is a key objective for efficient biofuel production. To achieve this objective, it is crucial to understand the response of fungi to lignocellulose substrates. more...

Expression data from Salix matsudana

(Submitter supplied) Salt responsive genes were identified in chinese willow (Salix matsudana) after the plants were treated with 100 mM NaCl. for 48 hours We used microarrays to identify genes responsible for combating salt stress. Those up-regulated during the NaCl treatment may protect the plants from damages caused by salt stress.
