Transcriptional Regulation of Sunflower Heliotropism and Phototropism

(Submitter supplied) Sunflowers are famous for their ability to track the sun throughout the day, and then reorient at night to face east the following morning. This process, termed heliotropism, is generally believed to be a specialized form of phototropism; however, the underlying mechanism is unknown. To better understand heliotropism we used RNA sequencing to compare the transcriptional profiles of sunflower stems during heliotropism, and blue light-induced phototropism.

PHOTOTROPIN 1 and 2 regulate photosynthesis and UV-induced oxidative stress and cell death

(Submitter supplied) Phototropins are plasma membrane‐associated photoreceptors of blue light. Arabidopsis thaliana genome has two genes, PHOT1 and PHOT2, encoding two phototropins that mediate phototropism, chloroplast positioning and stomatal opening. They are well characterized in terms of photomorphogenetic processes, but so far little was known about their involvement in photosynthesis and response to stress factors triggering oxidative stress and cell death. more...

A Ras GTPase associated protein is involved in the phototropic and circadian photobiology responses in fungi

(Submitter supplied) Light is an environmental signal perceived by most eukaryotic organisms that can have major impacts on their growth and development. The MadC protein in the fungus Phycomyces blakesleeanus (Mucoromycotina) has been postulated to form part of the photosensory input for phototropism of the fruiting body sporangiophores, but the madC gene has remained unidentified since the 1960s when madC mutants were first isolated. more...

Tropic-stimulus induced changes in gene expression

(Submitter supplied) Plants, although sessile, can reorient growth axes in response to changing environmental conditions. Phototropism and gravitropism represent adaptive growth responses induced by changes in light direction and growth axis orientation relative to gravitational direction, respectively. The nearly 80-year-old Cholodny-Went theory Went, F.W. & Thimann, K.V. Phytohormones (1937) (Macmillan, New York) predicts that formation of a gradient of the plant morphogen auxin is central to the establishment of tropic curvature. more...
