Two New Stromal Signatures Stratify Breast Cancers with Different Prognosis

(Submitter supplied) Purpose: Multiple studies from last decades have shown that the microenvironment of carcinomas plays an important role in the initiation, progression and metastasis of cancer. Our group has previously identified novel cancer stroma gene expression signatures associated with outcome differences in breast cancer by gene expression profiling of two tumors of fibroblasts as surrogates for physiologic stromal expression patterns. more...

Gene expression profiles of breast cancer subtypes are detectable in histologically normal breast epithelium

(Submitter supplied) Background: We hypothesize that important genomic differences between breast cancer subtypes occur early in carcinogenesis. Therefore, gene expression might distinguish histologically normal breast epithelium (NlEpi) from breasts containing estrogen receptor positive (ER+) compared with estrogen receptor negative (ER-) cancers. Methods: We examined gene expression in 46 cases of microdissected NlEpi from previously untreated women undergoing breast cancer surgery. more...

Gene Expression Profiling in Breast Cancer: Understanding the Molecular Basis of Histologic Grade To Improve Prognosis

(Submitter supplied) Background: Histologic grade in breast cancer provides clinically important prognostic information. However, 30%-60% of tumors are classified as histologic grade 2. This grade is associated with an intermediate risk of recurrence and is thus not informative for clinical decision making. We examined whether histologic grade was associated with gene expression profi les of breast cancers and whether such profi les could be used to improve histologic grading. more...

An expression signature for p53 in breast cancer predicts mutation status, transcriptional effects, and patient survival

(Submitter supplied) The biological tumor samples (ie, breast tumor specimens) consisted of freshly frozen breast tumors from a population-based cohort of 315 women representing 65% of all breast cancers resected in Uppsala County, Sweden, from January 1, 1987 to December 31, 1989. Estrogen receptor status was determined by biochemical assay as part of the routine clinical procedure. An experienced pathologist determined the Elston-Ellis grades of the tumors, classifying the tumors into low, medium and high-grade tumors. more...
