Staphylococcus aureus is among the most important human pathogens associated with a wide variety of manifestations, ranging from superficial skin infections, such as folliculitis, furunculosis, carbuncles, abscesses or scalded skin syndrome, to life-threatening conditions, such as osteomyelitis, endocarditis, pneumonia and septicemia. Within the plethora of more severe conditions caused by S. aureus, are bone-joint infections (BJIs) caused by the invasion and progressive destruction of bone tissues and cartilages.
