The encoded isoform (5, also known as TXNRD1_v3 or v3) has a longer and distinct N-terminus, resulting from translation initiation at an in-frame upstream start codon, compared to isoform 1. It is predominantly expressed in Leydig cells of testis, and contains an atypical N-terminal glutaredoxin domain, which induces actin and tubulin polymerization, leading to formation of cell membrane protrusions (PMID:18042542).
