An etiologic approach to obesity

Hosp Pract (1995). 1997 Aug 15;32(8):123-4, 126, 128 passim. doi: 10.1080/21548331.1997.11443547.

Abstract

Emotional or social barriers to a healthy diet and physical activity are typical in obese patients. Counseling can help identify the barriers and improve either the situation or patients' response to it. Long-term success most often occurs when there is a cognitive shift from focusing on weight to focusing on health. Drugs can be a useful adjunct but cannot substitute for lifestyle modification.
