TEXT

Description

FAM90A3 belongs to subfamily II of the primate-specific FAM90A gene family, which originated from multiple duplications and rearrangements (Bosch et al., 2007). For background information on the FAM90A gene family, as well as information on the evolution of FAM90A genes, see FAM90A1 (613041).

Cloning and Expression

By analysis of the human genomic sequence (build 36.1), Bosch et al. (2007) identified the FAM90A1 gene on chromosome 12p and 24 additional FAM90A genes and pseudogenes, including FAM90A3, on chromosome 8p. Bosch et al. (2007) referred to FAM90A3 as FAM90A copy 2. The deduced 434-amino acid FAM90A3 protein contains a CCHC-type zinc finger motif, suggesting that it may interact with RNA or DNA. RT-PCR using primers that did not distinguish between individual FAM90A genes suggested that members of FAM90A subfamily II, such as FAM90A3, are ubiquitously expressed.

Gene Structure

Bosch et al. (2007) determined that the FAM90A3 gene contains 5 exons. Exon 1 is noncoding and contains a LINE element, L1MB3, and the sequence 3-prime of the last exon includes a long terminal repeat of the ERV-K family. Like other members of FAM90A subfamily II, FAM90A3 lacks repetitive sequences at its 5-prime end.

Mapping

By analysis of the genomic sequence (build 36.1), Bosch et al. (2007) mapped the FAM90A3 gene to chromosome 8p23.1 (coordinates 7107719 to 7113030). It is the second FAM90A copy, counting distal to proximal, within the FAM90A repeat region and lies within cluster A, which also includes FAM90A15 (613051), FAM90A4P, FAM90A13 (613049), FAM90A5 (613043), and FAM90A20 (613059). FAM90A copies in cluster A are oriented nose to tail on the positive strand.
