- (CIT): Dr. Tessier-Lavigne is a world leader in the study of brain development and regeneration. He has pioneered the identification of the molecules that direct the formation of connections among nerve cells to establish neuronal circuits in the mammalian brain and spinal cord. He and his colleagues identified some of the first known chemoattractants and branching factors for developing nerve cells in vertebrates, such as the Netrin and Slit proteins. He has also been at the forefront of discoveries on many other brain wiring proteins and receptor mechanisms. In recent years, his group has found that many of the molecules and mechanisms that direct growing blood vessels are the same as those that direct growing nerves. The mechanisms he has identified are important for understanding how the human brain forms during normal development, and provide essential tools to assist regeneration of nerve connections following trauma or injury.
