Summary:
There are few interesting theories of human social behavior that do not have implications for demographic conditions, and there are no interesting theories of demographic behavior that do not reflect social and cultural considerations. Yet the interactions of these 2 analytically separate but empirically intertwined spheres are more often assumed or modelled only at the macro level than they are explored at the level of individual actors or those primary social units within which, all would agree, fundamental decision processes are carried out. This manual describes a set of procedures for the investigation of such microlevel relationships. It is divided into 5 general sections. In the 1st, we provide an introductory theoretical orientation and some historical notes on the development of the procedures. The section provides an overall description of those procedures. Section 3 details specifications for programmers, and section 4 provides instructions for users. Sections 1 and 2 are designed to provide an overview with little technical data. Since section 3 is for programmers, it is a reference section with details on changing the source code or understanding the algorithms more precisely. Section 4 is designed like a cook book to make the program run. Section 5 of the manual gives instructions on how to read these tapes and compile the test programs. The 5 program files that make up the SOCSIM program are: (MainSimp) which contains the main program and all of the event execution routines; (IOSimip) which contains all of the input/output routines as well as some generic multipurpose routines that are used by postprocessing programs; (HHSim.p) contains the household dynamic routines; (HHstub.p) contains only stubs of the household routines; and (INFACE.p) contains the user interface section which reads the instructions file, checks for errors, and prompts for corrections.
