Lupus Erythematosus, Systemic

A chronic, relapsing, inflammatory, and often febrile multisystemic disorder of connective tissue, characterized principally by involvement of the skin, joints, kidneys, and serosal membranes. It is of unknown etiology, but is thought to represent a failure of the regulatory mechanisms of the autoimmune system. The disease is marked by a wide range of system dysfunctions, an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and the formation of LE cells in the blood or bone marrow.

Central nervous system vasculitis that is associated with SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS. Clinical manifestations may include DEMENTIA; SEIZURES; CRANIAL NERVE DISEASES; HEMIPARESIS; BLINDNESS; DYSPHASIA; and other neurological disorders.

Neonatal Systemic lupus erythematosus [Supplementary Concept]

A rare autoimmune disease present at birth and characterized by a red skin rash similar to that observed in lupus erythematosus patients, although neonatal lupus is a distinct disorder. Affected infants may also develop liver disease, congenital HEART BLOCK; and THROMBOCYTOPENIA.
