Flies were anesthetised on ice, their second antennal segments (which contain the flies' Johnston's organs) were dissected, collected in Lysis Buffer (containing 1% beta-mercaptoethanol, as provided in the Qiagen Rneasy Mini kit) and subsequently placed in storage at -80 degrees Celsius. Samples were removed from the freezer for RNA extractions: These were conducted according to the Qiagen RNeasy Mini kit protocol. Sample libraries were prepared with a Nextera XT DNA Library Preparation kit (Illumina).

Sequenced reads were mapped to the dm6 Drosophila melanogaster reference genome using Partek Flow software. Read counts were produced using HTSeq from the bam files generated by Partek Flow. Normalization of read counts and subsequent statistical analyses were conducted with DESeq2. Genome_build: dm6 Supplementary_files_format_and_content: The processed_data.xlsx file includes the DESeq2-normalized counts for all samples (columns labeled ct01 to ct18), as well as the results of the statistical comparisons between them.
