Aegilops tauschii is a wild plant species that is diploid (2n = 14) with genome size about 4000 Mb. Extensive genetic evidence leads to the conclusion that
Triticum aestivum is the product of hybridization between
Triticum turgidum (AABB) and
Ae. tauschii (DD) [Kihara H (1944) Agric Hort 19:13-14 and McFadden ES and Sears
More...ER (1946) J Hered 37:81-89,107-116]. Ae. tauschii is composed of four morphological varieties, three of which are grouped into subsp. tauschii and thefourth is subsp. strangulata. Ae. tauschii ssp. tauschii is distributed from eastern Turkey to China while Ae. tauschii ssp. strangulata has been found only in two separate regions: southeastern (SE) Caspian Iran and Transcaucasia. The genome relationships between these two subspecies and the D genome of Triticum aestivum has been a long standing scholarly endeavor ( Nishikawa K (1974) In: Fourth Int. Wheat Genetics Symp vol 1, p 851-855; Jaaska V (1978) Theor Appl Genet 53:209-217; Jaaska V (1980) Theor Appl Genet 56:273-284; Nishikawa K (1980) Jpn J Genet 55:325-336; Jaaska V (1981) Plant Syst Evol 137:259-273; Dvorak J et al. (1998) Theor Appl Genet 97:657-670; and Lelley et al ). All support the assertion that the Aegilops tauschii ssp. strangulata is the donor of the D genome of T. aestivum. In order to understand the gene distribution in the wheat D genome, NSF has funded a project to develop the physical maps of all the 7 chromosomes of the D genome of Ae. tauschii. They plan to place large number of gene loci on these maps, integrate the physical maps with the wheat genetic and deletion maps and obtain a detailed picture of distribution of genes in the D-genome.
