Arabidopsis lyrata belongs to family Brassicaceae and is closely related to the model plant species
Arabidopsis thaliana. It is believed to have diverged from
A. thaliana about 5 million years ago. Comparative mapping analysis by
Kuittinen at al More... has shown that except for few large chromosomal rearrangements, there is almost complete colinearity between the genetic map of A. lyrata and A. thaliana.A. lyrata differs from A. thaliana in being self-incompatible and out-crossing. It is widely found in Eurasia and North America though the distribution is patchy. It has a genome of about 230 Mb, distributed over 8 chromosomes, which is 100Mb larger than the genome of A. thaliana which has 5 chromosomes and genome size of about 125 Mb. The Joint Genome Institute of the Department of Energy has sequenced the genome of A. lyrata. Comparative analysis of the genomes of two Arabidopsis species will be useful in understanding gene evolution. It will also help understand genetic variations within A. thaliana.
