This fungus is the causal agent of septoria tritici blotch, which is a common and economically important disease of wheat worldwide. The pathogen is a haploid hemibiotrophic ascomycete with both filamentous and yeast-like growth.The genome of the strain IPO323 has been completely finished and contains 21 chromosomes. The genome show high plasticity, it has been determined that eight of the 21 chromosomes could be lost with no visible effect on the fungus and thus are dispensable.
