Study observed macrophage-induced tumor cell proliferation in cocultures of human monocyte-derived macrophages and leiomyosarcoma and myxofibrosarcoma human and mouse cell lines, which was abrogated by silencing of CD163. Tumor development of sarcoma cells in CD163-deficient mice was significantly abrogated in comparison with wild-type mice.

While it is unclear why CD163 deficiency is initially beneficial, the late injurious effects are consistent with the key anti-inflammatory role of CD163 in the recovery phase of tissue damage

The absence of the CD163 receptor has distinct temporal influences on intracerebral hemorrhage outcomes.

In diabetic mice, increased sCD163 at wk 5 and decreased percentage of CD163(+) monocytes at wk 10 preceded alteration in kidney collagen IV mRNA at wk 20. In vitro incubation of monocytes in anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid increased the percentage of CD163(+) monocytes.

Monocyte CD163 is altered in association with diabetic complications: possible protective role.

During ischaemia, soluble CD163 functions as a decoy receptor for TWEAK, to regulate TWEAK-induced activation of canonical nuclear factor-kappaB and Notch signalling necessary for myogenic progenitor cell proliferation.

CD163 interacts with TWEAK to regulate tissue regeneration after ischaemic injury.
