(Submitter supplied) The deposition of unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) in selected regions of the brain results in irreversible neuronal damage, or Bilirubin Encephalopathy (BE). Although UCB impairs a large number of cellular functions, the basic mechanisms of neurotoxicity have not yet been fully clarified.
