heliorhodopsin HeR This HMM represents heliorhodopsins, a group of phylogenetically distinct microbial rhodopsins, which play an important role in absorbing and transferring light energy for numerous biological processes in bacteria. Heliorhodopsin was initially identified and characterized in a Gram-positive actinobacterium based on functional metagenomics and photochemical approaches. Heliorhodopsin have seven transmembrane domains, and exhibit similar biological function as microbial rhodopsins. However, heliorhodopsin form a distinct cluster based on phylogenetic analyses. Most microbial rhodopsins are hit by the Pfam HMM PF01036, which does not hit heliorhodopsins.
