lateral flagellin LafA This HMM describes rare second type of flagellin from E. coli and some closely related species, called LafA, where the familiar and common flagellin, FliC, is nearly universal and carries the H-antigen used for serotyping strains. In contrast to FliC, whose center region is highly variable, LafA shows little variability in sequence. In many E. coli strains, the Flag-2 locus either is absent or is cryptic, appearing degraded and non-functional.
