  • Update information November 2016: Recommendations 123 and 180 have been amended to add information on when eye screening should begin. Please note the date label of [2015] is unchanged, as this is when the recommendation was written and the evidence last reviewed. The changes made in November 2016 are clarifications of the 2015 wording, not new advice written in 2016, so do not carry a [2016] date.

15Management of type 2 diabetes in special circumstances – during intercurrent illness or surgery

15.1. Introduction

Management of type 2 diabetes during intercurrent illness or surgery was not covered by the scope for the 2015 update, but the guideline development group and NICE recognised that the 2004 recommendations for children and young people with type 1 diabetes should apply equally to those with type 2 diabetes, and so the relevant recommendations are mirrored in this section. The recommendations for the management of type 1 diabetes during intercurrent illness and surgery are presented in Section 9.1 and Section 9.2; however, these topics were not covered by the scope for the 2015 update and so there is no specific evidence to recommendations section.

15.2. Recommendations

158.

Offer surgery to children and young people with type 2 diabetes only in centres that have dedicated paediatric facilities for caring for children and young people with diabetes. [2004, amended 2015]

159.

All centres caring for children and young people with type 2 diabetes should have written protocols on safe surgery for children and young people. The protocols should be agreed between surgical and anaesthetic staff and the diabetes team. [2004, amended 2015]
