LiverTox: Clinical and Research Information on Drug-Induced Liver Injury [Internet].
Show detailsMost cases of drug induced liver injury ultimately resolve completely without residual liver injury or liver test abnormalities. Three major exceptions include the progression to acute liver failure, the evolution to vanishing bile duct syndrome, and development of chronic liver injury and cirrhosis. These serious consequences of drug induced liver injury are fortunately rare, but they can develop even though the causative agent is stopped promptly. Importantly, these outcomes can result in death or need for liver transplantation.
