Figure 22 is titled “Perceived Great Risk from Using Marijuana, Cocaine, Cigarettes, or Alcohol among People Aged 12 or Older, by Initiation Status: Percentages, 2015.” It is a bar graph, where four categories of substances are shown on the horizontal axis, and the percentages of people aged 12 or older who perceived great risk from using specific substances are shown on the vertical axis. The four substance categories are (1) marijuana, (2) cocaine, (3) cigarettes, and (4) alcohol. For each type of substance, the figure shows three bars. The first bar shows the percentage among those who initiated use in the past year. The second bar shows the percentage among those who initiated use prior to the past year. The third bar shows the percentage among those who had never used specific substances. Two notes are below the figure, the first of which says, “Perceived great risk for these substances refers to smoking marijuana once a month, using cocaine once a month, smoking one or more packs of cigarettes a day, and having four or five drinks of alcohol nearly every day.” The second note says, “Past Year Initiates are defined as individuals who used the specific substance for the first time in the 12 months prior to the date of the interview. Prior to Past Year Initiates are defined as individuals who used the specific substance for the first time more than 12 months prior to the date of the interview, regardless of whether they last used that substance in the past 12 months or more than 12 months prior to the interview.” Tests of statistical significance at the .05 level were performed between those who had never used specific substances and those who initiated use in the past year or those who initiated use prior to the past year; significant results are indicated where appropriate. Percentages of people aged 12 or older who perceived great risk from smoking marijuana once a month were 4.6 percent among those who initiated marijuana use in the past year, 11.6 percent among those who initiated marijuana use prior to the past year, and 43.2 percent among those who had never smoked marijuana. The estimate among those who had never smoked marijuana is significantly different from among those who initiated marijuana use in the past year and among those who initiated marijuana use prior to the past year. Percentages of people aged 12 or older who perceived great risk from using cocaine once a month were 23.8 percent among those who initiated cocaine use in the past year, 46.2 percent among those who initiated cocaine use prior to the past year, and 76.5 percent among those who had never used cocaine. The estimate among those who had never used cocaine is significantly different from among those who initiated cocaine use in the past year and among those who initiated cocaine use prior to the past year. Percentages of people aged 12 or older who perceived great risk from smoking one or more packs of cigarettes a day were 64.5 percent among those who initiated cigarette use in the past year, 69.3 percent among those who initiated cigarette use prior to the past year, and 77.9 percent among those who had never smoked cigarettes. The estimate among those who had never smoked cigarettes is significantly different from among those who initiated cigarette use in the past year and among those who initiated cigarette use prior to the past year. Percentages of people aged 12 or older who perceived great risk from having four or five drinks of alcohol nearly every day were 61.0 percent among those who initiated alcohol use in the past year, 67.3 percent among those who initiated alcohol use prior to the past year, and 75.6 percent among those who had never had a drink of alcohol. The estimate among those who had never had a drink of alcohol is significantly different from among those who initiated alcohol use in the past year and among those who initiated alcohol use prior to the past year.

Figure 22Perceived Great Risk from Using Marijuana, Cocaine, Cigarettes, or Alcohol among People Aged 12 or Older, by Initiation Status: Percentages, 2015

Note: Perceived great risk for these substances refers to smoking marijuana once a month, using cocaine once a month, smoking one or more packs of cigarettes a day, and having four or five drinks of alcohol nearly every day.

Note: Past Year Initiates are defined as individuals who used the specific substance for the first time in the 12 months prior to the date of the interview. Prior to Past Year Initiates are defined as individuals who used the specific substance for the first time more than 12 months prior to the date of the interview, regardless of whether they last used that substance in the past 12 months or more than 12 months prior to the interview.
