Figure 4. Risk of Bias Assessment on 21 Randomized Controlled Trials
Figure 4 gives the risk-of-bias (study quality) ratings for each of the criteria considered to assess study quality (adapted from the Cochrane Risk of Bias criteria) for the 21 randomized controlled trials included in the report. The criteria being assessed include random sequence generation (selection bias), allocation concealment (selection bias), blinding of participants, blinding of personal/providers, blinding of outcome assessors, incomplete outcome data (dropout rate less than 20%), incomplete outcome data addressed (attrition bias; Loss to follow-up missing or explained), selective reporting (reporting bias), and several additional sources of bias: standardized measurement tool used, washout period of at least 3 months for steroid injections or 6 months for Hyaluronic acid, co-interventions either avoided in the trial design or the authors ensured that they were similar between the index and control group, and complete outcome data. For each item, raters assign a score of low, high, or unclear risk of bias.
