Protein identification by tandem mass spectrometry. Tryptic peptides are separated by liquid chromatography and elute into the mass spectrometer. The mass of the parent tryptic peptide is measured in MS-1. The peptide is then fragmented and the masses are measured. In the example above, the mass of the tryptic peptide is 1,392 (it has a charge of +2). The fragments and masses are shown.
