Bud site selection and construction. (a) The participation of different protein complexes in bud site selection may be rationalized by assuming that Bud1, together with Bud2 and Bud5, acts as a mediator between the proteins involved in establishing a landmark (Bud3, Bud4, Axl1, and Axl2) and those that organize the bud site. (b) In the absence of Bud1, the bud site organizers are not able to recognize any landmark, and budding occurs randomly. (c) If the landmark is defective, Bud1 and associated proteins are still able to guide the organizers to a default site and polar budding occurs.
