Model of the enterococcal cell wall. The peptidoglycan layer is depicted above the lipid bilayer with membrane bound lipoproteins and lipoteichoic acid. Bound to the muramyl residues of the peptidoglycan are wall teichoic acids, the rhamnopolymer whose synthesis is tied to the epa locus, as well as surface-anchored proteins and capsule.
