Diatoms and dinoflagellates dominate coastal marine environments, typically with seasonal succession of a spring to summer bloom in temperate coastal waters. Here we profiled in situ time-sequential metatranscriptomes of a phytoplankton community that evolved from a diatom-dominant (Skeletonema) assemblage to a dinoflagellate (P. donghaiense) bloom to interrogate the major metabolic and ecological drivers governing each community and their transition.
