Description

Ammonia-oxidizing Archaea (AOA) carry out the first step of nitrification, an important step in the global nitrogen cycle. AOA were enriched from the sediment of the mesotrophic lake Burr Oak in Ohio (USA). The enrichment culture contained an ammonia oxidizer, a nitrite oxidizer and several heterotrophic bacteria.
