The harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja) is a neotropical species. It is considered the largest and most powerful raptor found throughout its range and among the largest extant species of eagles in the world. It is most common in Brazil, but can be found from Central America to as far south as Argentina (from Wikipedia entry). This sample was procured by Tomas Hrbek and Guilherme Oliveira and used to generate a high-quality reference genome for the Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP). Sequencing and genome assembly were conducted in the Vertebrate Genomes Lab (VGL) at the Rockefeller University, led by Olivier Fedrigo and Erich D. Jarvis.
