Description

This bacterial endosymbiont is a member of the phylum Verrucomicrobia. It is an obligate intracellular partner of the dagger nematode Xiphinema americanum (Dorylamida), a plant-parasitic nematode with a wide range of hosts, including fruit trees, grapes, grasses and soybeans, which transmits nepovirus. The bacterial endosymbiont is thought to occur in all members of the X. americanum species complex, where it occurs within the cells of the gut of males and females, and within the cells of the ovaries and eggs of females. It is hypothesized to induce parthenogenesis and may play a role in nutritional supplementation in its host.
