The North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is a large quill-covered rodent in the New World porcupine family, and the second largest rodent in North America (Wikipedia entry). This sample is from an male collected in Northern Minessota by the Departments of Natural Resources (exact location not known), procured by Liz Huamani and Felix Grew of the Field Museum in Chicago, to generate a high-quality reference for the Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP). Sequencing and genome assembly were conducted at the Vertebrate Genomes Lab (VGL) at the Rockefeller University, lead by Olivier Fedrigo and Erich D. Jarvis.
