The Mexican gopher tortoise is the largest tortoises in North America. They inhabit the Mexican states Chihuahua, Coahulia and Durango, but are primarily found in Chihuahuan Desert. This genome was supported by Robert Murphey and Taylor Edwards. Sequencing and assembly were conducted at the Vertebrate Genomes Lab (VGL) at The Rockefeller University, led by Olivier Fedrigo and Erich D. Jarvis, as part of the Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP). The genome was assembled by Arang Rhie.
