Strain 105 was established from a single polyp collected by Dr. Tsutomu Sugiyama in September, 1973 from a swamp adjacent to the National Institute of Genetics in Mishima, Japan and has been propagated asexually in a number of labs ever since. The 105 culture in Dr. Rob Steele's Lab was established from animals obtained from Dr. Hiroshi Shimizu at the National Institute of Genetics in Mishima. Note: the 105 strain was formerly called Hydra magnipapillata but was renamed to Hydra vulgaris.
