Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, a gram-negative, facultative anaerobic cocobacillus, is an important pathogen related to aggressively progressive periodontal breakdown in adolescents and adults. The bacteria can be divided into 6 serotypes (a-f) according to their surface carbohydrate antigens.
