Plasmids carrying the blaNDM-1 beta-lactamase gene have been reported in many Gram-negative bacterial pathogens. The blaNDM-1 gene confers resistance to all available carbapenems and cephaslosporins and is often found associated with genes that confer resistance to other clinically important antibiotics, rendering the pathogen essentially untreatable. This project will address the global spread of the blaNDM-1 gene and its genetic context.
