Background: Staphylococci and Mammaliicocci have acquired resistance to most beta-lactam antibiotics through genome-encoded the mec genes (mecA, mecC). Information about nasal carriage of methicillin resistant staphylococci (MRS) and mammaliicocci (MRM) in camels is scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and characteristics of MRS and MRM in healthy camels.
Material and Methods: Fourty-six dromedaries (Camelus dromedarius) from seven Algerian farms were sampled by nose swabs. MRS and MRM were isolated using ORSAB and cefoxitin supplemented blood agar plates. Initial identification was performed using MALDI-TOF MS, followed by a PCR to confirm the presence of mecA and mecC. Whole genome sequencing was performed using the MinION long-read sequencing platform. Bioinformatics analysis was performed using different tools provided by the Center for Genomics Epidemiology.
