Eight sterol-degrading bacterial strains were isolated from five marine sponge species after enrichment with cholesterol as growth substrate. Isolated strains include one Mycobacterium sp. strain and seven Cellvibrionales strains from the oligotrophic marine gammaproteobacteria (OMG) group.
